Rental Properties & Inspections

Owner or Manager

Before you can lease your home or building for occupancy by others as a residence, you must secure a certificate of occupancy for each leased unit.  After finding by the building official that the unit or units comply with the minimum standards of the Housing Code, a certificate of occupancy is issued for a period of 2 years.  The renewal of the certificate of occupancy must be applied for no later than 60 days prior to the expiration date.

Tenant or Renter

Do your homework.  Ask questions.  Don't be afraid to ask to see a copy of the certificate of occupancy.  Or ask if the property is in the process of foreclosure. The City of St. Paul Park inspects rentals with two or more units.  Listed below is the recent rental inspection.

Landlord and Tenant Rights and Responsibilities

Certain rights and duties apply to landlords and tenants everywhere in Minnesota. Visit the Minnesota Attorney General's webpage for the most recent handbook.
